Se estima que el brote de ébola en curso ha provocado más de 8.300 muertes, siendo el más grande de este tipo hasta ahora registrado. Aunque se limita principalmente, en esta ocasión, al África Occidental, las ramificaciones de la enfermedad han sido globales. La transmisión generalizada de la enfermedad fue evidente en Guinea, Liberia, Sierra Leona, observándose casos adicionales en Malí, Nigeria, Senegal, España, Reino Unido y EE. UU.
